About this model
Product Description
Marsh Models MM321 accurately represents the Ford GT Mk IV driven by Bruce McLaren and Mario Andretti to victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring on 1 April 1967. Finished in the distinctive yellow Ford Motor Company livery carrying race number 1, the model captures the competition debut of Ford's all-American Mk IV sports prototype, one of the most technically advanced endurance racing cars of its era.
The Mk IV was developed from Ford's experimental J-Car program following extensive redesign work prompted by the fatal testing accident that claimed Ken Miles in 1966. The production race cars featured a bonded aluminum honeycomb chassis built by Kar Kraft, improved aerodynamics, enhanced driver protection, and Ford's proven 427 cubic-inch (6,997 cc) FE V8 engine. The combination produced exceptional straight-line speed while maintaining the durability required for long-distance competition.
Sebring marked the first competitive appearance of the Mk IV and served as a critical proving ground ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans later that season. Bruce McLaren and Mario Andretti started from pole position and immediately demonstrated the car's potential. Despite the demanding nature of the Sebring circuit, the Ford proved both fast and reliable, steadily increasing its advantage throughout the race. After twelve hours, the pair secured an emphatic overall victory by twelve laps, validating Ford's investment in the new design and confirming the Mk IV as the company's premier endurance prototype.
The Sebring-winning chassis, J-4, remains one of the most significant Ford competition cars ever constructed. Its victory established the Mk IV as the benchmark prototype entering Le Mans, where another Mk IV would later secure Ford's fourth consecutive victory in the French endurance classic. Although the Mk IV enjoyed only a brief international racing career before changing regulations rendered the 7-litre prototypes obsolete, its achievements secured its place among the most important American-built sports racing cars.
Marsh Models has long been respected for producing highly accurate, limited-production resin kits aimed at experienced collectors and builders. MM321 faithfully reproduces the unique bodywork, proportions, and details of the Sebring-winning Mk IV, making it an excellent addition to any collection devoted to Ford's international endurance racing program or the golden era of prototype sports car competition. Historical Note: The 1967 12 Hours of Sebring was the competition debut of the Ford GT Mk IV, the final evolution of Ford's 7-litre endurance racing program. Built in the United States around an advanced aluminum honeycomb chassis by Kar Kraft, the Mk IV represented a significant departure from the earlier British-built GT40 variants. Bruce McLaren and Mario Andretti converted pole position into a dominant overall victory, winning by twelve laps and demonstrating the car's speed and reliability under race conditions. The success at Sebring validated Ford's redesign of the former J-Car concept. It provided the confidence that led directly to the Mk IV's triumph at Le Mans later that year, completing one of the most successful seasons in Ford's international sports car racing history.
